Emmanuel Sherman (left) consults with Adrian Robinson, Exploration Director for African Petroleum, at the dedication of a new Engineering GIS lab donated by African Petroleum. The new GIS lab was donated to the University of Liberia's Science and Engineering department as part of African Petroleum's local content and social development initiative. "Oil should not be a curse for Liberia as it is in other countries," president of the university Dr. Emmett Dennis said at the dedication. The new lab will serve to develop the technical capacity of Liberians and increase their access to knowledge so that Liberians can begin control operations like this in the future. At the time of the dedication, African Petroleum was drilling at a depth of 1,000 km, 150 km off the coast south of Monrovia. The exploration project is the first active drill in 25 years for Liberia.

From Sherman:
New GIS lab is meant to encourage data aquisition through the new GIS system. "Getting the data is one thing. Converting the data into information is another. We use the GIS to convert data into usable information."
