CULLMAN, AL – OCTOBER 13, 2014:
Donald Abbott, 35, (left) walks through the yard with son Brody, 9, and wife Jamie, 33. In February 2014, the Abbott family purchased a sofa set from Buddy's Home Furnishings, opting to pay for it in weekly installments at a high interest rate. If the family continues to pay throughout the entire two-year payment plan, the sofa set will cost them over $4,000. The father, Donald Abbott, is the sole breadwinner of the family, making between $230 and $500 a week. On bad weeks, the $110 sofa payment equals roughly half the family income.
