NAIROBI, KENYA - DECEMBER 31, 2007: A pedestrian declares her innocence moments after a brigade of Kenyan soldiers violently disperse a crowd of Orange Democratic Movement supporters. A surge in violence left scores of people dead in Nairobi as defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga prepared to declare himself head of state, after rejecting the victory of incumbent president Mwai Kibaki. Despite news briefings for non-aggressive police action, a rising death toll reflected questionable methods from the General Service Unit, the paramilitary wing of Kenya’s police charged with establishing order.
