BIRMINGHAM, AL – JANUARY 18, 2024: Students participate in a day of "intercession" at Glen Iris Elementary, a public elementary school located near Birmingham's southside neighborhood. Since the pandemic, inequality has widened in America's schools, but there are a few bright spots that have shown outsize recovery. One such district is Birmingham, Ala. which has more than 100 percent made up its pandemic losses in math through multiple strategies including spring, fall and winter break "intercessions" where students are given extra days to learn.
