HUNTSVILLE, AL – APRIL 2, 2014: Passengers are checked by TSA security personnel at Huntsville International Airport. In an attempt to reverse the trend of declining service by airlines in small airports, Huntsville International Airport attempted to implement a rebate plan that would offer incentives to some carriers for enhanced service to the midsize city. The Federal Aviation Administration cautioned that the plan could potentially violate a federal law barring interference with airline fares, routes or service levels. When the industry’s largest trade group, Airlines for America, threatened to, the airport’s plan was disrupted. As major airlines continue to trim service offerings in smaller, less profitable cities, airports like Huntsville International struggle to attract and maintain carriers.
