PELHAM, AL – MARCH 30, 2020: Susan Lee, 43, spends time with her 12 year-old daughter, Alyssa, outside their home in the Keenland Valley neighborhood. As a special education teacher with 23 years of experience in Shelby County schools, Lee has found it challenging to establish a rhythm at home with her own special needs child, in the midst of school closures due to coronavirus. "It obviously makes things hard," Lee said. "As teachers, we want what's best for our students. And as parents we want the same, but we can't provide that right now." Lee's daughter was born with RETT syndrome – a genetic neurological disorder that impairs most basic functions. "Like most kids with special needs, she likes a routine," Lee said. "So it's stressful. It's required a lot of thinking outside the box. But the kids are stressed too. In their undeveloped brains, they're struggling more than we think they are."
